Hospitals

Every year, hospitals in the US produce approximately 5.9 Million tons of Medical Waste. That averages to about 33lbs of medical waste per day, per staffed bed! If those figures sound alarming, they are! That’s why having a partner like BioSecure on your side can assist with the “mountain” of questions, solutions and disposal perspectives that hospitals face daily.

About 15-25% of all the Medical Waste produced, is considered Regulated Medical Waste (RMW) and has to cared for, transported, and disposed of in a way where it’s safe to the staff, patients and the general public.
Examples of RMW:

  • Sharps- Any needles, ampules, broken glass, blades, razors, staples trocars, guide wires, etc. (Red Sharps Container)
BioHazard- Any infectious waste, blood products, contaminated personal protective equipment (PPE), IV tubing, cultures, stacks, etc. (Red Container or Red Bag)
  • Trace Chemo- Any empty vials, ampules, empty syringes, needles, empty IVs, gowns, gloves, tubing, aprons, wipes and packages. (Yellow Container)
  • RCRA Hazard- Any hazardous meds (RCRA), half/partial doses, hazardous bulk meds, P-listed drugs and packaging, bulk chemo and pathological waste. (Black Container)
  • Pharmaceutical- Any pills, injectables, antibiotics, etc. (Blue Container)

Who are at the risk of Biomedical Waste Exposure?

Individuals who have the highest risk of being exposed to biomedical waste, for instance, healthcare workers, patients, waste collection and disposal staff, and even our environment. The biomedical waste may pose an occupational hazard when managed incorrectly. Therefore, we need special precautions and the well-trained personnel to manage those biomedical wastes and keep the risk low. With BioSecure comprehensive medical waste solutions, our clients-the staff at hospitals, as well as hospital patients, can rest to sure that their liability is effectively reduced, the danger of exposure is eliminated, and their reputation (the hospitals reputation) is unharmed.

We look forward to serving you and your facility’s needs. Call us today.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), World Health Organization (WHO) and Department of Health (DOH), has continuously updated their guidance and recently provided more clarity regarding medical waste management and overall safety, security and transparency.
